Here’s a funny fact: only 7% of people use the “peach” emoji as a fruit while others use it to symbolize the butt. Emojis have already taken an important role in today’s’ social media behavior and can be used as a way to show one’s deep feelings toward another during a chat. Turns out, using these little icons increases one’s chances of having a successful relationship and several researchers decided to hold emoji-related studies to prove it.

We have carefully read these studies and prepared a brief summary for you.

While daters from previous generations were lucky to meet their chosen ones in person, the modern world dictates new rules. Communication via various messengers has set a new trend, creating new etiquette rules for chatting as well as new aspects of people’s psychology that researchers are carefully studying.

2 recent studies held by Amanda N. Gesselman, Vivian P. Ta, and Justin R. Garcia reflect carefully conducted research on the influence of using emojis in interpersonal situations. And here’s what they managed to find out.

Emojis increase chances for a first date.

Study #1 examined whether using smile icons could help to form connections with potential dates, whether it increased chances for a face-to-face meeting, and whether it affected “success” in intimacy. 5,327 single American adults aged from 18 to 94 took part in the research. The participants were asked a range of questions related to how often they use emojis and how many first dates they had within the year.

As surprising as it may sound, the results of Study #1 showed that those who frequently use emojis while texting had more first dates as well as successful intimate relationships.

Additionally, the study revealed that nearly 30% of American singles use emojis and the most frequent reasons for such use are self-expression, more personality in texts, and trendiness.

Emojis help develop relationships.

Study #2 served as extended research of study #1 and was meant to find out how using emojis affected the progress of first dates; whether they were followed up by second meetings in addition to other meet-ups.

275 single American adults with ages ranging from 18 to 71 took part in the experiment. The participants were asked about the number of first and second dates with the same person over the past year, whether they were using emojis before and after the first date, as well as the details of their sexual behavior in the same year.

The results showed that the participants were quite active in using emojis and they reported a bigger number of second/third dates with their texting partners which has shown a big correlation between using smileys and successful romances. Emojis help them to develop relationships with their potential partners further, as well as engage in sexual activity.

All in all, both studies proved the interconnection between using emojis and the successful development of romantic relationships. Those little smiling faces help people establish relationships and enjoy their results. So grab your phone and send a couple of emojis to your significant other if you’re in a relationship or a bunch of them to your potential partner if you’re single.
